Do you think most Mifflin County
youth drink alcohol regularly?
Do you think most kids regularly use other drugs?
THINK AGAIN!

If you don’t use alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs,
you are in the majority!

MOST Mifflin County teens DON’T use!
Most Mifflin County youth have

BETTER THINGS TO DO!

The statistics in the illustration to the right are based on results from the October 2005 Pennsylvania Youth Survey administered to 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students in the Mifflin County School District. 1,185 students participated in they survey. *Reported is the percentage of students who report NOT using each of these substances in the past 30 days.

So you may be thinking, “How do you know these percentages are accurate?”  Good question!  We are aware that sometimes a student’s first reaction may be to embellish the truth when they are asked sensitive questions regarding substance abuse. Or, they may do just the opposite and underreport substance use. In fact, research has shown that, on average, 2 to 4% of people will not be truthful on an anonymous survey like the PA Youth Survey.

Much research over many years has been done on the PA Youth Survey; it has been shown to be a valid survey.

Here’s some information to give you an idea of what was done to identify and remove the surveys of those who did not take the survey seriously:

1.) If students report using some of the drugs an unrealistic amount of times daily, the exaggerated use causes their survey to be removed.

2.) Students who report using all of the drugs on the survey will have their survey removed, because this is not humanly possible!

2.) There are particular questions in the survey that check how consistently students answer. If reported use is unrealistic and answers are inconsistent, we suspect that the results are not valid. Those surveys are removed.

In Mifflin County, these methods caused 2% of our PA Youth Surveys to be removed. How many is that? 23 surveys. That is about what we’d expect, and shows that the majority of our students were honest.

Now, just to be very cautious and skeptical of the results, let’s go one step further and say “what if an additional 2 to 5% of the students did NOT take the survey seriously and underreported their drug use … but we didn’t catch them.” O.K. Let’s then subtract 5% from our reported percentages.

Guess what? We STILL find that MOST students DO NOT use these substances!
